CTA and g39 operate the following policy with regard to selecting and exhibiting works/ artists:
General guidelines:
-
CTA and g39 will aim to show a minimum of 60% Welsh or Wales-based Artists during any twelve month period. This underlines our mission statement and reinforces our commitment to new work from Wales
-
CTA and g39 will focus on new, emergent or un-established artists. Where there are demonstrable benefits in showing more established artists alongside new artists a percentage of higher profile artists will be acceptable.
-
No members of the board or paid staff may show at the gallery except as part of larger offsite projects or as part of a hire group during the open season
-
Wherever possible a fee will be paid to artists totalling not less than £100. Where projects are un-funded this is not always possible and artists will be notified prior to agreement.
-
No artist may show without having submitted a written proposal.
Artists will be notified in advance of the exhibition and a contract drafted at that point. Fees shall be payable at the close of the
exhibition.
Artists are selected through the following channels:
-
Twice yearly an open call for submissions will be distributed through advertising Nationally (Britain) via the art press and similar recognised channels.
-
During the year a call for submissions will be distributed to studio groups within Wales and to email groups nationally.
-
CTA/ g39 aims to have representatives from the gallery at degree shows/ MA shows throughout Wales on an annual basis to assess new/ interesting work, however, it is not desirable to show students work during their study period (excepting gallery hire groups during the open season).
-
Studio visits will be carried out at intervals throughout the year.
-
Where artists demonstrate a compatability with a planned exhibition it is deemed acceptable to invite artists to submit proposals.
-
If it is approved at board level, an artist may be allowed to show more than once during a
twelve month period if their work shows significant change or promise.
Decisions are reached by the following process:
-
Details of all submissions will be held on file and artists contacted/ selected when appropriate.
-
All decisions on exhibitions will be approved by a minimum of three staff at weekly staff meetings and presented to the board at the earliest opportunity.
-
Any interests [outside of professional working relationships] a selector has with the artists must be declared at board level and a case made for their inclusion/ exclusion.
