Neda Mohammah Nejad

Lives and works in Cardiff

Neda Mohammad is Persian calligrapher working across classical scripts including Nastaliq, Shekasteh Nastaliq, and Thuluth. Her practice is grounded in rhythm, discipline, and the expressive movement of line, where each stroke balances structure and emotion.
“Alongside calligraphy, I practice Persian illumination (Tazhib), a traditional visual language that extends beyond manuscript decoration into architecture, sacred objects, poetry books, and independent artistic compositions. Historically, Tazhib developed as a refined system of ornamentation using gold, geometry, floral abstraction, and layered symbolic motifs.
These motifs are not purely decorative; they carry deep cultural, philosophical, and sometimes spiritual meanings, often reflecting ideas of unity, infinity, nature, and inner harmony. In my work, I reinterpret these forms through natural rhythms such as flowers and organic movement, translating symbolic structures into contemporary compositions.
While rooted in tradition, I position Tazhib as an independent contemporary language, exploring how this symbolic visual system can move beyond historical contexts and engage with today’s artistic discourse.”
Neda has over 20 years of experience and has exhibited work both in Wales and Iran. She was an art teacher in Iran and has hosted workshops throughout her career. Her recent exhibitions include NHS Group exhibition, Cardiff. madeinroath Group exhibition, Cardiff. Illumination Group Exhibition, Iran.
