Marcos Chaves, Amoroso, 2008
Marcos Chaves’ work opens a dialogue with the geographic and historical condition of places. It is built upon appropriation and intervention, often focusing on borders, both between different countries and differing ways of being.
Chaves began his artistic endeavours in the early 1980’s using appropriation and intervention parameters, the artist works in diverse media, openly moving between the production of objects, photographs, videos, drawings, words and sounds. “Marcos Chaves surprises meanings and values that are immersed in vulgar things, dissimulated by habit or convention. He makes unpredictable displacements and produces assemblages in a tone of parody distilling his acute observations of the world, from technology to rubbish.” (Ligia Canongia). There is a humorous tone present in all of his work, often not only as an element of the piece, but as the fundamental core. Half of the work is in the hands of the viewer. It is the viewer who will utter the last word or better, the last laugh.
