Unit#1 David Shepherd

Unit#1 continues throughout July with sculptural interventionist David Shepherd. David has been developing new work over a period of approximately three months, reclaiming aspects of The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp as a starting point towards a new body of interventions to g39’s internal project space.


In the Film High Plains Drifter director Clint Eastwood constructed an entire town on the shores of Mono Lake because the area was so photogenic. During the filming process part of this town seems to have been deconstructed and recycled to make tables and chairs for a welcoming party for the film's returning saviour! At the end of filming the town was razed to the ground and the area cleared. In this process of creation, re-purposing and destruction Shepherd sees a mirror of his practice. He holds a fascination for the labour of making and often the ‘work’ implicit in the processes he uses becomes his subject.

Working as much with process as presentation the space will undergo a series of changes over the coming weeks as objects come and go during the period. Like an itinerant workman David has already come and gone with tin cans, cement mixers, giant oars, ships and remote control helicopters. David’s show in Unit#1 anticipates a degree of attention throughout a period that sees the artist as caretaker, engineer or even repairman as is needed regarding the changing nature of his occupation of Unit#1.

Mae Unit #1 yn parhau drwy gydol mis Gorffennaf gyda’r ymyraethwr cerfluniol David Shepherd. Mae David wedi bod yn datblygu gwaith newydd dros gyfnod o ryw dri mis, gan adennill agweddau ar The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp fel man cychwyn ar gyfer corff newydd o ymyraethau ar gyfer gofod prosiect mewnol g39.


Yn y ffilm High Plains Drifter, creodd y cyfarwyddwr Clint Eastwood dref gyfan ar lannau Llyn Mono am fod yr ardal mor ffotogenig. Yn ystod y broses o ffilmio, ymddengys fod rhan o’r dref wedi cael ei dadadeiladu a’i hailgylchu i wneud byrddau a chadeiriau ar gyfer parti i groesawu iachawdwr y ffilm! Ar ôl y gwaith ffilmio, chwalwyd y dref yn gyfan gwbl a chliriwyd yr ardal. Yn y broses hon o greu, ail-addasu a dinistrio, gwêl Shepherd adlewyrchiad o’i ymarfer. Mae wedi’i hudo gan y broses o greu ac yn aml y ‘gwaith’ sy’n rhan o’r prosesau y mae’n eu defnyddio yw ei destun.

Gan weithio yn gymaint gyda phroses a chyflwyniad, bydd y gofod yn mynd drwy gyfres o newidiadau dros yr wythnosau nesaf wrth i wrthrychau fynd a dod. Fel gweithiwr teithiol, mae David eisoes wedi mynd a dod â chaniau tun, cymysgwyr sment, rhwyfau mawr, llongau a hofrennydd sy’n cael ei reoli o bell. Mae sioe David yn Unit #1 yn gofyn am rywfaint o sylw drwy gydol cyfnod sy'n gweld yr artist fel gofalwr, peiriannydd neu hyd yn oed atgyweiriwr fel sydd ei angen mewn perthynas â natur newidiol ei alwedigaeth yn Unit#1.
