Natasha MacVoy, 2019
Devised by artists for artists, the UNITe 2019 season is an autumn/winter programme of artistic experimentation, research, discussions, film, talks and presentations, and more.
Taking inspiration from independent art schools, studio groups and other ways that artists get together to support each other, g39’s UNITe season transforms the exhibition venue into a shared artist studio space and communal hub.
UNITe studio community fosters and supports artists at any career stage. It is a space for artistic practice and its associated research, testing ideas, taking wrong turns, sharing ideas, serendipity, and discovery.
During UNITe 2019 we are supporting eight artists through our intense programme. This year the artists are Daniel Clark, Mylo Elliott, Sophie Lindsey, Natasha MacVoy, Amber Mottram, Manon Parry, Radha Patel and Tessa Waite. The artists are encouraged to contribute to the programme supporting each other as a peer group.
The public are welcome to visit and we will be open our usual hours Wednesday - Saturday. There is also a series of free public talks and events (see the calendar below). We invite the public in to witness the often-unseen studio activity of artistic practice and take part in the conversations that emerge from this.
By bringing audiences and artists together in this way we want to promote an understanding of where visual art comes from. Whatever the context and wherever the situation – the studio, the workshop, the library, the laptop, urban or rural – are all places of production that are usually kept separate from the gallery environment. UNITe 2019 concludes with an open studio event, led by the artists to see what they have been doing and to celebrate well into the final hours of the residency.
Open: Saturday 26th October – Saturday 21st December

The Elsewhen Series:
Leah Marojević and Theo Clinkard
Across the duets of The Elsewhen Series, Leah Marojević and Theo Clinkard continue the work of the Romantics. Embodying their values to soften the industrial, question productivity and physically defend the dream space.
Conceived to be stumbled upon by audiences in unconventional performances spaces, these strikingly designed duets bring the spontaneous wanderings and powerful yearnings of the heart and mind into the visible realm through duration, repetition and the naive belief that the body doesn’t have to be here, it can be elsewhen. Part of the CARDIFF DANCE FESTIVAL.
Saturday 23rd November, 2pm-3:30pm
Talk: Bryony Gillard
Bryony Gillard will present her multifaceted practice situated between writing, performance, video and exhibition making. She draws on the notion of constant revision — states of being in which structures or ideas can be subverted, dissolved or questioned. ‘…my work attempts to create a space for genealogies of Feminist practice that are allusive, messy and entangled in contemporary concerns.’
Friday 29th November, Open 6pm, talk starts at 6:30pm
Warp Workshop: Writing Applications
A seminar on writing applications for opportunities aimed at artists and curators at any career stage. We want to think about structure of information, writing clearly, ambition and confidence, and a little about work examples. There are no perfect answers, and all opportunities are different, but we can all learn something from sharing ideas, approaches and experience.
Places are limited (20 max). Booking essential via eventbrite: http://g39.eventbrite.com
Wednesday 4th December, 2 – 5pm
Talk: Daniel Trivedy
Recent Eisteddfod Gold Medal winner Daniel Trivedy will talk about his practice and research processes. I am interested in our psychological relationship to each other. What are the origins, ramifications and consequences of these relationships? How are these relationships changing in an increasingly connected world where people have different views of the future? Fundamentally, I am interested in the glue that holds us together but also that which keeps us apart.
Friday 6th December, Open 6pm, talk starts at 6:30pm
UNITe Open Studios 2019
